BCIT fair focuses on drones and how to operate them safely

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Drones are not toys, but they can be fun.

A fair at BCIT today is meant to keep the airspace safe and the pilots entertained.

Chris Young with Flying Cameras Inc says the technology can be used for great causes, like search and rescue operations, but people need to know how to fly drones responsibly.

“The aircraft systems are capable of some phenomenal things and users have to learn those features and then safely apply those features to the applications that they want to fly in.”

Young says there are some basic rules that people should know, like staying away from airports and a wide variety of other rules.

“You shouldn’t fly more than say 90 metres altitude and you want to stay away from highly developed areas, for instance, downtown Vancouver, you don’t want to be flying there.”

He believes, for the most part, people are responsible while in flight, and for the people who aren’t he’s happy to spread the message to keep the skies safe.
