Richmond city council and Asian community members set to meet for a multilingual event

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – As Richmond‘s city council in operates in English, some concerns have been lost in translation. City council and several groups are coming together to bridge the language gap.

Four translators will help with the dialogue between city council and the crowd.

City Councilor Bill McNulty says there are several topics that are sure to come up, like the expanding population and security concerns.

“I’m sure the issue of signage will come up, I’ll be mentioning that we want a minimum of 50 per cent English on our signs. I guarantee transportation will be coming up, you know those kinds of things.”

McNulty believes anytime city council can better engage with the community, it’s a good thing.

He says these kinds of events used to happen more often.

“We would move around from mosque to temple to school to areas where we actually held our intercultural meetings.”

McNulty says with a huge increase in the population of the city, these meetings were forgotten about.

The first meeting is Friday. For details on the event click here.
