Energy and the environment set to dominate talks at the first ministers meeting: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The premiers and the prime minister will meet this week in Vancouver for the first ministers meeting.

is speaking with a political expert who says this is a real test for Justin Trudeau.

Energy and the environment are set to dominate the discussion according to Hamish Telford with the University of the Fraser Valley.

He says getting people to agree on a single topic might be difficult.

“He wants to get a national strategy on climate change and carbon pricing. Of course, we have a carbon tax here in British Columbia, a fairly robust one.” That is not the case across the country as Saskatchewan’s premier has said that his province will reject any carbon pricing strategy. “So how you coordinate all of these very different positions and strategies into one coherent whole is not clear to me.”

“We’ve seen the government of BC and in its Throne Speech and to a certain extent in its budget taking swipes at Alberta, so that could be a frosty relationship there.”

Prime Minister Trudeau will be live in studio at NEWS 1130 on Tuesday morning.
