Sharks come from behind to beat the Canucks

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver rookie Jake Virtanen had a goal and an assist in the first period, but San Jose scored three unanswered goals to rally for a 3-2 win over the Canucks at Rogers Arena.

After back-to-back wins over Ottawa and Colorado, the Canucks have now lost three games in a row. Two of those losses came at the hands of the Sharks.

Virtanen opened the scoring with a solo effort just over seven minutes into the first period. The speedy rookie picked up his own rebound and then on a wraparound attempt, he banked the puck off of San Jose’s Joe Pavelski and in for his sixth goal of the season.

The Canucks made it a 2-0 lead with 1:29 remaining in the opening period. Virtanen started the play, sending the puck back to the blueline to Dan Hamhuis, who had his shot tipped in by Sven Baertschi. That goal gave Virtanen and Hamhuis two points each.

San Jose got on the board with a questionable goal in the second period. Tomas Hertl deflected a point shot past Ryan Miller, but his stick appeared to be above the cross bar. The call on the ice was a goal and video review didn’t provide conclusive evidence to overrule the call, so the goal stood.

Early in the third period, the Sharks scored a couple of quick goals to take the lead. Brent Burns fired one through Miller on the powerplay to tie the game, and then a little under five minutes later, Patrick Marleau finished off a two-on-one with Joonas Donskoi to make it 3-2.

Vancouver had a great chance to tie the game with the goalie pulled in the final minute, but Martin Jones made a great stop on Daniel Sedin to preserve the win for the visitors.

The Canucks and Sharks play again on Saturday in San Jose.
