BC needs to change strata act to accommodate electric cars: VEVA

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Getting condos on board with electric cars is the next big hurdle, according to a group representing drivers of those vehicles, which wants the province to change the strata act.

From new financial incentives to a rule change that allows drivers of electric cars to drive solo in the HOV lane, Bruce Stout with the Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association has plenty of nice things to say about the province when it comes to what they’ve done for people like him this week.

“The next big hurdle we’ve got to overcome is the people that live in multiunit residential buildings, or MERBS, and have a strata council that’s preventing them from charging their car,” says Stout.

So he wants the province to change strata law to ensure chargers are in every building where an owner wants one.

“Nobody realizes in a strata council that charging an electric car costs about two cents a kilometre,” says Stout. “So for $2, you can charge an electric car and drive 100 kilometres.”

Stout says up to now, most people buying electric cars have been people living in detached homes.
