Survey says most of us would contemplate selling our cars in favour of carsharing

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – In Vancouver you see them everywhere – Modo, Car2Go, and Evo – carsharing vehicles.

So, it’s not surprising a majority of car-owners in the region say they would contemplate giving up their cars in favour of carsharing.

A recent survey done by Insights West in conjunction with Modo shows 13 percent of Metro Vancouverites and 22 percent of Millennials are relying on carsharing already.

The poll also finds most of us (57 per cent) would consider ditching the car we own for one that we can share, for a fraction of the price. A whopping 85 per cent of Millennials would consider selling their cars.

Selena  McLachlan with Modo, which commissioned the survey, points out getting around without owning a car is just getting easier.

“Because of the plethora of mobility options like one-way carsharing, two-way carsharing, ridesharing, and ride-sourcing. People are discovering you can live life without owning a car.”

She says where housing costs are so high, it’s no wonder people want to avoid the costs of owning a car.

“You’ve got people squeezed for cash, particularly with Millennials trying to get into the home market and dealing with student loans. If you were to find yourself with an extra $600 a month, it provides a lot of freedom.”

Modo estimates car ownership costs, on average, $9,000 a year.
