It’s National Password Day — How often do you change yours?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Today marks the mid-way point of Fraud Prevention Month. It’s also the first National Password Day, put on by the Better Business Bureau.

It seems many people still aren’t taking safeguarding their information seriously. So, the BBB wants to remind consumers what’s at stake.

“People have to understand that you need to make your passwords fairly complex… at least 10 characters long, using upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols,” says Evan Kelly with the group’s BC branch.

Avoid using any family names and try a unique form of spelling certain words.

“Password Day is meant to be a friendly and gentle reminder that in order to protect your accounts and your online, financial and personal security, changing the passwords two or three times a year is a really good thing to do,” adds Kelly.

He’s also reminding businesses — especially smaller, independent ones — that they need to be just as stringent as individuals.
