Canucks’ slumping season means more tickets donated to charity

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – While the Canucks may be losing a lot lately, some local charities are winning.

More people are donating their tickets this season.

Shelley Leonhardt with Kids Up Front says the boost in ticket donations is helping a lot of people. “We work with 125 child-serving agencies in the Lower Mainland.”

“It’s a huge honour when they get a ticket to a Canucks game,” she tells us.

Leonhardt says when you compare this season to the Stanley Cup run in 2011, “Certainly, the Canucks did not give us as many tickets back then as we’ve received even last season and, of course, this season.”

She explains some tickets are donated directly from the Canucks, and others are from the public.

Chris Brumwell is with the Canucks for Kids Fund, which has also seen an increase in donations.

“Ultimately, those tickets go into the hands of children and families that would never otherwise have an opportunity to go to the games,” he says.

Brumwell notes even the team is chipping in.

“If there’s a game coming up that we know we’ll have remaining tickets left over that won’t sell, the Canucks will also put those into the pool and donate out into the community.”

He tells us the Canucks for Kids Fund hands out about 5,000 tickets per season.
