Are wealthy Canadians paying their fair share of taxes?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A new Mainstreet/Postmedia poll finds 81 per cent of Canadians do not believe the rich are paying their fair share. The survey on tax avoidance and tax evasion comes after the publication of the Panama Papers, an unprecedented leak of files from the database of a major international law firm.

Vice-President at Mainstream Research David Valentin says many people in Canada think the tax avoidance plans of the rich are having an impact on our economy as a whole.

“Canadians really do not like the idea of this at all and in fact are so turned off by the coverage of tax evasion that they seem to be correlating it as well with legal ways to avoid tax,” he explains. “Sixty-one per cent described it as very damaging, another 15 per cent said it was somewhat damaging. Those are very significant numbers”

The poll also asked which political party is least likely to be influenced by the rich when looking at tax laws and the Green Part was the runaway choice with 60 per cent. The most likely to be swayed – the Conservatives.
