Canucks season ends with a shootout win over Edmonton

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Emerson Etem had a goal in regulation and the shootout winner as the Vancouver Canucks beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in their season finale.

Etem tallied in the seventh round of the shootout after Patrick Maroon had missed on his attempt for Edmonton. Alex Burrows and Jake Virtanen also had shootout goals.

With the victory, the Canucks finish the season with a record of 31-38-13, which gives them 75 points. They finish in 28th-place overall and will draft no worse than sixth overall.

Derek Dorsett got the Canucks on the board first. Just past the midway mark of the first period, Dorsett one-timed a Matt Bartkowski pass off the far post and in for his fifth goal of the season.

Edmonton pulled level 13:46 into the second period. Darnell Nurse beat Jacob Markstrom with a long shot through a screen to make it 1-1. Leon Draisaitl provided the screen for the Oilers.

Etem gave the Canucks the lead back early in the third period. He snapped a shot that fooled Cam Talbot for his seventh goal of the season. Dorsett drew the only assist for his second point of the game.

The Oilers got back on even terms again thanks to Burnaby native Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. He got his stick on a loose puck to reach 12 goals on the season and tie the game 2-2.

Jannik Hansen put an exclamation point on his career-season by giving the Canucks the lead with just 4:08 to play. Bartkowski sprung Hansen with a stretch pass and he fired a shot off the post and in for his 22nd goal of the season. Maroon responded for Edmonton though as he scored a powerplay goal with 1:28 remaining to make it 3-3.

The Canucks had a few good chances to end the game in overtime, but Cam Talbot came up big a couple of times to force a shootout.

Prior to the game, the Canucks announced their annual player award winners. Among the winners were Jannik Hansen (Unsung Hero), Bo Horvat (Most Exciting Player), Ben Hutton (Best Defenceman) and Daniel Sedin (Most Valuable Player).
