Will Ottawa’s move to legalize pot undercut gang activity?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – City crews have made quick work of all the garbage left over after the huge 4/20 pot rally at Sunset Beach in Downtown Vancouver.

Yesterday, the federal government also announced the timeline of the legalization of marijuana and there are claims from some experts the move will kill a lot of gang activity once Canada starts to legalize weed next spring.

The only real signs of a pro-pot event this morning were a couple of piles of trash ready to be picked up.

University of the Fraser Valley Criminologist Jon Heidt isn’t sure about that. “I just don’t see any kind of evidence that actually happening in any of the other places that have already done it.”

Organized criminals are already diversified in the drug trade and Heidt feels that they will simply shift to focus on other activities, but fewer people may enter gang life because one of the lucrative draws is gone.

During yesterday’s 4/20 pro-pot rally, police turned away more than a dozen people for their apparent connection to gangs.
