Closures on the Pattullo Bridge begin this weekend

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – Getting around in New Westminster and Surrey is about to become very difficult.

Closures for construction on the Pattullo Bridge start this weekend, lasting until October.

TransLink‘s Jennifer Morland says lane closures on weekdays will likely add 40 minutes to your commute, if you still want to take the Pattullo.

“For some drivers, it might make sense to look at other options. We’ve added service hours to several bus routes and identified additional park and ride locations near SkyTrain stations. So, transit might be a faster and more convenient option,” she tells us.

“[The bridge is] about 79 years old. We need to do some important work to make sure that it stays safe and open for drivers. So, crews are going to be focusing on making extensive repairs to the deck,” adds Morland.

The span will close tomorrow at 8 p.m. and re-open on Monday at 5 a.m. After that, traffic will be down to one lane in each direction until September 30th — with the exception of a couple nights a week and one weekend per month when it will be completely closed.

It will also be closed the weekend of September 30th to October 3rd.

Tolls on the Port Mann will remain during construction, so the Alex Fraser Bridge remains the free option for drivers. The Pattullo closure comes at the same time Front Street through New Westminster is also shut down.
