BC students being taught to become ‘masters of disaster’

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – In the event of an earthquake would you and your children know what to do?

Teachers across BC are part of a new initiative with the province called “Master of Disaster,” to teach students what they need to do when a disaster hits.

To become masters of disaster, students will be provided with learning tools they will use to become better prepared. These tools are to create stronger and connected house holds that understand the importance of working together before, during and after a disaster.

Parents are encouraged to use the lessons the children bring home to better prepare as a family.

Minister of State for Emergency Preparedness Naomi Yamamoto says the project is from a proactive all hazards perspective.

“So, that means students that are in the coastal BC areas may apply the materials to earthquakes and tsunami risks, while students in the interior may apply it to wildfires or perhaps floods.”

Yamamoto stresses the importance of every family needing to know the risks, having an earthquake kit and being prepared with a plan.

The program will be formally rolled out to schools in BC this fall.
