Emergency Preparedness Week kicks off at Science World

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It is Emergency Preparedness Week and the City of Vancouver is joining forces with Science World to mark the occasion.

That’s where you can find interactive booths and displays from local scientists, first responders, and emergency preparedness agencies today.

You can also test your seismic construction skills on UBC’s earthquake shake table, learn about the City’s Disaster Support Hub initiative, and see how an earthquake early warning system works.

You can even find out what an earthquake feels like with the help of the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s “IBC Shake Zone” earthquake simulator.

Dave and Amy were there with their cousins and their young daughter.

Dave says knowing what to do when the big one hits has always been back of mind. “If you grew up in BC, you learned about the big quake all the time so I think people recognize it is pretty important in this part of the country to be prepared for these kinds of things.”

While Amy says showing kids who can be relied on is imperative.”[It is] good to see firefighters and for [the kids] to get comfortable with firefighters. These are friends, people who can be helpful. It is nice to know the community will be there if anything happens.”

Today’s event runs between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
