Grouse Grind opens to hikers today

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Another sure sign that summer is on the way. The Grouse Grind is open to hikers as of this morning, but that can bring a host of other problems.

The popular 2.9 vertical climb will now be open every day until 7 p.m. until November, with tens of thousands expected to tackle the 2,800 step.

But Mike Danks with North Shore Rescue says there are some safety concerns since it’s become what he calls a “trendy trail.”

“You have got to remember it is not your typical hike because you are basically going straight up hill. It requires a certain level of fitness to do that. I think people need to do their research and allow adequate time to do that and you know it’s not a bad idea to bring a little bit of food with you to keep your energy up.”

Danks says they’ve pulled a lot of people off the trail over the years that have been woefully prepared. “[We see] people in dress shoes and people in high heels. We have even had people that have go up in flip flops so you know you might get away with it once or twice, but it is going to bite you at some point. Always wear the proper footwear, which would be a light hiker or something that gives you a bit of support.

The Grind was named one of the ten most deadly hikes in the world by Outdoor Magazine last year.
