Red Cross launches safety app for emergencies

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There is a new high tech way to stay in touch with your loved ones in the event of an earthquake, fire or flood. The Canadian Red Cross has launched a safety app in time for Emergency Preparedness Week.

It helps people prepare for all types of emergencies by advising them on how much food, water and medical supplies each home should have.

Naomi Armstrong with the Canadian Red Cross explains the program also comes with some very useful features to use when disaster strikes. “For example, one tool that is pretty neat is a button that lets you send a message to your friends and family saying that you are safe and giving your GPS location. It would help people keep track of each other in case of an emergency.”

Armstrong notes the app is also helpful before anything goes wrong. “We always talk about knowing the risks, making a plan and being prepared with a kit. This is an app that will be super handy on your phone, available in French and English, and free. That is really important so that we can really help support people to have more information and be more prepared.”

The Be Ready app is available for free on iOS and Android devices.
