VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Expect several major road closures if you’re driving into the city this morning. Up to 16,500 people will be running the sold out BMO Vancouver Marathon.
Executive Director Charlene Krepiakevich says along with the health benefits the event is a financial win for the city. “We did a study in 2013 based on similar numbers and we had generated about 45 million in economic impact in the region.”
The BMO Marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier. To make the cut, men 18-34 have to run it in three hours and five minutes, while women have to finish it in three hours and 35 minutes.
- Race routes will impact traffic starting at Queen Elizabeth Park and ending at West Pender St between Bute and Thurlow
- Areas affected are: Riley Park, Cambie, Oakridge, Fairview, Kerrisdale, Dunbar, UBC, Point Grey, Kits, False Creek, Chinatown, Yaletown, West End, Coal Harbour & Downtown
- Roads will re-open as the last racer has run through that section.
- “No Parking” zones along the course
