Vancouver saw warmest April in three decades

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You probably felt it first-hand — Vancouver just experienced its warmest April in 30 years.

The average temperature for April was 11.9 degrees, 2.5 degrees above the monthly average of 9.4.

That continued into the first few days of this month, says NEWS 1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate.

“All together, we counted 24 new temperature records yesterday, including a number of them locally,” he tells us.

“A number of long-standing temperature records fell all across the province yesterday, including in Greater Vancouver [where] 24.7 eclipsed the old mark of 23.9 set in 1945. This one really stood out, with Chilliwack reaching 29.9 degrees, breaking the old mark of 28.3 set in 1898.”

Much of the credit has to go to the El Niño phenomena.

Looking ahead to May is no sure thing, but early indications are promising.

“We’ve looked at the long-range charts through the rest of May and it appears to be unseasonably warm. Our next sample of virtual summertime shows up later this week — the temperatures soar well into the 20s again,” says Russ.

The weather we’ve already had is good news for the BC’s agriculture industry, as well. Some reports suggest we could see strawberries hit the shelves up to three weeks ahead of schedule.

And the region is already gearing up for a hot and dry summer. Metro Vancouver water restrictions begin even earlier this year. They kick in on the 15th of this month.
