FORT MCMURRAY (NEWS 1130) – A wildfire threatening Fort McMurray, Alberta has doubled in size overnight. It’s now over 2,650 hectares.

Hot temperatures are again creating a challenge for firefighting efforts.

Fire information officer Lynn Daina says crews are watching the weather closely.

“We’ll stay tuned as the wind picks up and the heat picks up… If it’s south-southwest, that will be blowing it towards the city. South-southeast will be blowing it away.”

Several more communities are under mandatory evacuation orders.

Unseasonably hot temperatures combined with dry conditions have transformed the boreal forest in much of Alberta into a tinder box.

The wildfire threat ranging from very high to extreme.
