Don’t expect as many mosquitoes in Metro Vancouver this year

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you’re planning to do some camping over the long weekend, you probably won’t need to pack bug spray right now. It’s all thanks to the early start to our spring.

Michael Jackson is with Culex, the company that controls mosquitoes in Langley Township, Surrey, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Coquitlam, and all parks in Metro Vancouver.

He isn’t expecting to have to deal with too many of the pests in the weeks ahead.

Snow was melting earlier than normal this year, which meant an early start to the overall mosquito season. Jackson’s team was out two or three weeks before it used to be.

But now, things have dried up, which means we won’t see as many mosquitoes as in years past.

“We normally get quite a high freshet during the spring, [but this year] it’s looking like it’s completely petered out already. There’s actually no snow left up there because of all the hot weather,” he explains.

“It’s sort of exhausted itself already, so that’s why we don’t think there’s going to be major flooding this year and hopefully, there won’t be so many mosquitoes.”

Jackson says the early start to mosquito season is typical of the last few years.
