Conservatives readying for policy conference in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Tories are coming! They’ll be in Vancouver this week for a federal convention and it is also their first trip out to the west coast since the election in October.

The party will likely discuss what went wrong with the race and according to one political expert, they’ll do what they can while in BC to regain ground with voters.

“This is a place where have been strong in the past, but lost a lot of ground in the last election,” says Hamish Telford with the University of the Fraser Valley. “If they’re going to make a comeback, I would say it’s going to start here.”

The process of selecting a new leader will also likely be a hot topic.

Members like Maxime Bernier and Kellie Leitch have submitted their nominations for the Leader of the party and Telford expects them as well as others wanting to compete to trek to the West for face-time with voters.

“I would expect them to be here making themselves known and trying to get as many media interviews as possible because they’re known enough to Conservatives who’re going to vote, but they’re not necessarily well-known to the general public.”

The Conservatives will choose Stephen Harper’s replacement in 2017.
