The elbow seen round the country impacting party perceptions: expert

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – A political scientist says the criticism of Justin Trudeau’s actions is backfiring on one group.

This scandal is of course, not good for the Liberals, but calling this an assault is problematic for other parties according to one political expert.

“To suggest that this an assault of epic proportions and he would be fired if he had any other job, I think are exaggerations,” says Hamish Telford with the University of the Fraser Valley.

“People said it was Justin Trudeau walked across the aisle with anger in his eyes, but it was Tom Mulcair on the videotape who was blowing his top. I don’t think this helps the NDP.”

But he understands why they went after the Prime Minister.

“Seeing an opportunity to put a dent in him for the first time since the election last fall and they are trying to exploit it, but I think they are at risk of overstating it.”

Telford says the Conservatives played this scandal well, criticizing Trudeau without going to extremes.

“The Tories I think have been generally more moderate, I think their leader, Rona Ambrose, has played it about right. She asked for the offending Liberal motion to be withdrawn. This was the motion that was cutting off debate on the assisted suicide bill and potentially other pieces of legislation as well,” says Telford. “The Liberals have obliged her, So I would score that a win for Rona Ambrose and she’s handled it really well.”
