Most British Columbians find their commute ‘pleasant:’ poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – How’s your commute? If you’re like most British Columbians, you’re satisfied with the experience.

An Insights West poll finds more than six in 10 people in this province find it “pleasant,” while only about three in 10 find it “annoying.”

But Mario Canseco with the pollster says there isn’t much appetite for tolls, even if they would lead to faster commute times.

“Forty-two per cent say they’d be happy making less money if they can get a job that is closer to their home. So, you have roughly two out of five who are saying they are okay with taking pay cuts. But when it comes to paying for tolls as a way to reduce commute times, only 34 per cent support it.”

He says tolls are a hard sell for the government, “more than anything because we’re not used to this. I think there’s a lot to be said about the way in which you could implement something like this before British Columbians massively say that they support it.”

There is also a split on what constitutes the ideal commute, as one third says it would involve driving, while 23 per cent would prefer public transit. A further 23 per cent would rather walk to work.
