Police officers getting ready to ride in Tour de Coast

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – In just a couple of months, more than 100 cops from across the province will tour around BC to raise money for sick kids. It’s for the annual Tour de Coast bike ride which raises money for sick kids and cancer research.

Since the event was created in 1997 more than $36 million has been raised for children battling cancer and to send them to a special camp to take their mind off their battle.

Delta Police Sergeant Sarah Swallow is one of this year’s captains and admits it can emotional but it’s a way to give back.

“We meet kids and their families that are going through cancer. It’s incredibly hard to see. But there are some really happy stories. And we are able to provide some of those happy moments. We are able to share our stories with those families.”

“A lot of the parents will come and tell us, they were going through something alone and then they hear about Cops for Cancer and it amazes people there is a group of individuals that are out there fundraising and you take a little bit of that and you put a little bit of that in your heart.”

Many of the officers participating this year say the experience is also humbling. “Kids and cancer should never be in the same sentence. This cause is one that is near and dear to all of our hearts. Sadly, most of us have been touched by cancer in some way, whether it’s an immediate family member, a co-worker, a friend or a neighbour. We have all been impacted by cancer,” adds VPD Superintendent Michelle Davey.

Officers will bike hundreds of kilometres between September 21st-29th.
