Province confirms $246M for Metro Vancouver transit improvements

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Federal funding has already been promised, local mayors are working on ways to come up with their share, and the provincial government has now announced a major contribution for transportation and transit improvements across Metro Vancouver.

TransLink Minister Peter Fassbender has confirmed the province is providing $246 million over three years for transit improvements.

It comes as Translink’s Mayors’ Council reveals how the transit authority wants to come up with its part of the funding for Phase One of their $7.5-billion transportation plan.

Walton says a $246-million provincial commitment for Phase One is be a good start, but he’s concerned about the funding for later stages.

“Building those rapid transit lines in Vancouver and the ground-level light rapid transit in Surrey has a longer continuum. Therefore, I think those folks are certainly concerned about the latter funds, which will be directly involved in the construction.”
