Dick Van Dyke coming to hometown to restore home

DANVILLE, Ill. – Dick Van Dyke plans to return this summer to the eastern Illinois town where he grew up to lead a fundraising drive aimed at saving his childhood home.

Van Dyke announced Friday that he will make two fundraising appearances at events in Danville on June 24. Money raised will be used for the restoration effort on his house.

The 90-year-old Van Dyke said in the announcement that he has always been the “same Midwestern nerd” people in the small town knew decades ago. He said he grew up thinking Danville was the centre of the universe and said he still does.

A number of well-known entertainers grew up in Danville. They include Van Dyke’s brother, Jerry, actor Gene Hackman, actor Donald O’Connor and singer Bobby Short.
