Saturday was rainiest day in 2016 for Metro Vancouver

METRO VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Metro Vancouver received more rain in a single day Saturday than any other this year.

In fact, it was the wettest day in May in over 15 years.

The amount of rainfall varied over parts of the Lower mainland, with White Rock receiving just nine millimetres while other areas of Metro Vancouver received close to 50 millimetres.

“Looking at Vancouver International Airport, since midnight Saturday morning, we’ve seen 23 millimetres. We haven’t seen a day in May since 1998, when we got over that amount of precipitation,” says Environment Canada meteorologist Jennifer Hay.

She says the rain is a nice boost to the water levels.

“We’ve been talking about water restrictions and the low snowpacks this year. We did have a fairly snowy winter compared to last year, but because it melted so quickly, we were seeing the snowpacks go down. So this will be good for water levels.”

The rain caused some traffic mayhem with reports of street flooding and downed tree branches.

Elsewhere in the province, the Coquihalla Highway was under a snow advisory, while snowfall warnings were issued for Fort Nelson.

This low pressure system is expected is expected to move on.

“It looks like a wet couple of days. But we do have a ridge coming in, so it looks like Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are going to be very nice, actually. We just need to get through the weekend,” says Hay.
