Vancouver Craft Beer Festival now underway

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Lovers of ales, lagers and IPA’s are raising a glass this weekend for the seventh annual Vancouver Craft Beer Festival.

This year’s ever-growing festival sees over 100 breweries putting up more than 400 types of beer and cider for sample.

Festival co-founder Leah Heneghan says it’s a big change from their early days with only a handful of participants, and contributes their success to Vancouver being a very “local focused” city.

“People like to pay attention and go and visit their local businesses more than trying to go to big box stores or something like that and I wonder if that is a big part of that here. People like to support the people they know in their own neighbourhood,” she explains. “You know there is still a huge market share for the Molson Canadians and the Budweisers and all of those guys. You know realistically all of the small breweries are ordering more tanks and they can’t keep up with demand, so I don’t think we are close to a tipping point here.”

And she doesn’t believe we’ve hit the peak with craft beer, with more small breweries scheduled to open this year.
