Whitecaps play host to struggling Houston

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Whitecaps hope to return to form on Saturday afternoon against Houston Dynamo at BC Place. (3pm)

A run of three straight victories came to an end last weekend in Portland, and the theme of the week that followed was tightening things up for the Whitecaps.

“We’ve talked about focus, just a lack of concentration in certain areas at certain times that have cost us games.” Vancouver’s Jordan Harvey said earlier this week.

“It’s not like there’s a lack of communication or organization. There’s big things that have cost us in key moments.” Harvey added. The Whitecaps grumbled about giving away last week’s 4-2 defeat to the Timbers in the Cascadia Cup battle.

Statements like that from Harvey sound a bit suprising, given the club has posted a 3-1-0 record in the month of May, but head coach Carl Robinson stressed this week that the team has conceded 24 goals in 14 games – too much for his liking. At the other end of the park, the Whitecaps have scored 22 goals this season.

“It’s going to be a tough game for us.” Robinson said this week.

“Our boys have to be mentally right, and focus. If we are, and we cut out the individual errors that we had in the last game that plagued us, we should be fine.”

Saturday’s match marks the last go before a two week MLS break. Vancouver has three key players absent on international duty for the Copa América Centenario. Those include Kendall Waston, Blas Perez, and Christian Bolanos.

Vancouver will still be in action between now and June 18th, however. Defense of the Voyageurs Cup begins June 1st in Ottawa against Ottawa Fury FC. The second leg of that event takes place June 8th at BC Place.

Houston (3-7-2) has struggled this season, entering Saturday’s action winless away from home.
