Local mayors questioning who should run TransLink

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As funding for Metro Vancouver’s next major road and transit projects is being hashed out, the question of who should be at the helm of Translink is once again being tackled by local mayors.

The governance of Translink has been a question thrown back and forth between its Mayors’ Council and the province as they squabble over funding issues.

The mayors are once again demanding more power as they push for support for their latest tax and toll funding scheme and the District of North Vancouver’s Richard Walton says they are prepared to make tough decisions on transit.

“[We will] look for the public support at the municipal elections. We are prepared to do that and we have done it before, so we are continuing to ask for more control over the governance so we can move forward with what we think is right for the region. We are quite prepared to take that responsibility from the province.”

“People know local governments don’t have the ability to tap into certain sources of funding, even if they demonstrate public support. Most local mayors and councils certainly have before and will again make the tough decisions,” he adds,

The minister responsible, Peter Fassbender has previously said changing how TransLink is run isn’t in the works.
