Whitecaps begin their defence of the Voyageurs Cup this evening in Ottawa

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – The Whitecaps enter this year’s Amway Canadian Championship as the defending champions. Vancouver finally earned its first Voyageurs Cup after thirteen years and the Caps will be eager to repeat the feat.

The Whitecaps title defence begins tonight against the Ottawa Fury FC. Assistant Coach Martyn Pert expects this year to be an even bigger challenge.

“We are defending it and it is always more difficult to defend it then win it the first time. We really want to put a really effort in and win the title. We can to keep the Cup in Vancouver.”

Vancouver is dealing with a handful of injuries and will rely on a younger roster tonight. 15-year old forward Alphonso Davies is expected to see some playing time after being called up from WFC2. Pert says the youngster has all the tools to be an impact player.

“He it tall, he is quick and he has a great temperament for the game. He is a humble but confident boy. He has many good attributes and I have been very impressed with him so far. Every step that has been put in front of him he has done well.”

Pert cautions if Davies does make it on to the field, the Caps can’t overwhelm him with game plans and strategy.

“The key for us is to give him a clear head and not fill his head with too much information. His talent has got him this far and his characteristics have got him this far, so we need to let him express himself.”

This will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. Kick off is at 4:30 p.m.

Leg two of the semifinal is next Wednesday at BC Place.
