Two Metro Vancouver cities crack MoneySense’s top 10 Best Places to Live in Canada

By

TORONTO (NEWS 1130) – Living in Metro Vancouver may be pricey, but two local cities have cracked the top 10 in a new ranking of the best places to live in all of Canada.

The annual list compiled by MoneySense Magazine features four B.C. cities in the top 20.

West Vancouver ranked highest at 7th while the District of North Vancouver followed right behind at 8th.

The rankings are based on 35 separate variables like safety, mobility and affordability

Ranking near the bottom in the latter of those categories didn’t do too much damage to West Vancouver.

“Yes it’s (West Vancouver) the most expensive place in the country, there’s no question about that. But even when it scores zero essentially on affordability, it basically gets high, high marks in every other category we look at. So it loses more than 10 per cent of its score right off the bat and it still makes it high on the list,” says MoneySense Magazine managing editor Mark Brown.

When it came to meeting criteria, the District of North Vancouver was very close to its neighbouring municipality says Brown.

“It’s (District of North Vancouver) very similar to West Vancouver. There are a couple differences. Income levels are a little lower, the median income is a little bit lower than what you’d find right next door in West Vancouver. North Vancouver is a bit more of a business centre and obviously does very well, but is just a little bit below the life that you’d find right next door in West Vancouver.”

Port Moody (11th) finished just out of the top 10 while the only other municipality in the top 20 was Delta (14th).

The City of North Vancouver came in at 25th.

British Columbia did well in two more obscure categories.

The highest number of pickup trucks per capita went to Fort St. John at 49 per cent while Whistler has the highest number of singles in the country with 86 per cent of its population unmarried.
