Caregiver accused of stealing more than $250,000 from a senior

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) A 49-year-old woman from Burnaby is accused of stealing $270,000 from a 91-year-old Coquitlam woman. RCMP say this case should serve as a warning to children of seniors with caregivers.

The accused worked as a long-term caregiver for the victim and her husband.

Constable Jamie Phillipson with the Coquitlam RCMP says the woman’s daughter alerted them when she noticed a large amount of money had disappeared.

“There’s evidence that suggests this person was making withdrawals from the ATM upwards to $1000 on a daily basis. Obviously with a sum close to $270,000, this was something that had spanned for the last year and a bit.”

He adds the caregiver was seen on surveillance camera withdrawing the money. RCMP believe the suspect stole the victim’s debit card without permission.

Antonette Dizon has been charged with theft over $5,000.

Constable Phillipson says children of elderly parents with care workers should routinely check their parents’ finances to prevent theft like this.
