SFU researcher develops technique to help induce sleep

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Do you spend hours lying in bed every night, trying to calm your brain and get a good sleep?

We’re hearing about a solution out of Simon Fraser University that doesn’t involve counting sheep.

We normally think we have to calm our minds to fall into that dozy slumber, but Dr. Luc Beaudoin has developed a technique that involves imagining random scenes, one after another.

So, maybe you imagine Pluto, and a few seconds later, you picture a piano.

“This activity actually interferes with your thinking about other concerns that might stress you out and prevent you from falling asleep,” explains Beaudoin. “It also has the benefit of emulating the kind of dreamy, loose imagery that we tend to experience as we’re falling asleep.”

Beaudoin has developed an app that gives you things to picture.

He is presenting his research at a conference that starts today in Denver.
