Snow pack melt ahead of schedule

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There’s some good news for those worried about possible flooding over the summer–most of the snow in the mountains has already melted.

“A rapid melt earlier in the season resulted in higher than normal flows, particularly through April. We saw the peak of the snow melt period throughout May,” explains Dave Campbell with the River Forecast Centre.

This year’s melt is about three to four weeks ahead of schedule.

Campbell says recent flooding in the northern parts of our province can be blamed on rain, not snow melt.

“Rainfall is going to be an important factor as we go into the late summer flows. At this point, it’s really quite uncertain what we’re going to get in terms of rainfall.”

Rainstorms are the biggest risk for any flooding over the summer.
