Surrey development that includes hundreds of homes put on hold

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Advocates call it a victory for parents and students in Surrey.

Municipal politicians in that city have decided to look at re-working a development that would have added almost 300 new homes to an already-packed neighbourhood.

The big issue is a lack of room in local schools.

Cindy Dalglish is a community activist who has been calling on council to delay some developments because schools are packed. She feels adding more units will mean more kids will suffer.

She’s is glad councillors have agreed to put the development on hold until there are more resources.

“The city has been talked to by the province [saying] ‘We need more revenue generation. We need more people to come in.’ Yet, they’re not supporting that with the infrastructure that needs to be in place. So we’re stuck, in a way.”

Dalglish believes it was a bad fit.

“It’s right on a very busy street — 152nd really close to Highway 10… the traffic is already a nightmare. The parking’s a major issue. And the schools are just completely over-crowded.”

Dalglish says the city, province and developers need to work together to figure out how best to help kids, home owners, taxpayers and builders get what they want.
