First responders back province’s decision to replace the Massey Tunnel

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Some local first responders are applauding the provincial government’s decision to move ahead with a replacement bridge for the Massey Tunnel. They believe it will make their jobs easier in the long run.

The union representing paramedics in BC is in favor of replacing the aging tunnel with a new 10-lane bridge.

President Bronwyn Barter understands there might be short term challenges with congestion in Richmond, but believes the government is making the right decision moving ahead. “We understand there is going to be challenge with access in the meantime, but we have that all the time with construction and we’re aware of it. We re-route and we figure out planning ahead of time in how to get to the patients in an emergency.”

She adds the tunnel has been the scene of a lot of crashes over the years, posing many challenges for emergency crews trying to get to those who need help.

Barter understands not everybody is happy with the decision, but believes any short term traffic frustrations are worth it if it means people can get the help they need faster.

Yesterday, the governing body that oversees the region came out against replacing the tunnel with a 10-lane crossing. Metro Vancouver feels there has been a lack of consultation and wants the province to delay things to consider other options.

Construction on the tolled $3.5 billion project is expected to get underway next year.
