Lions offence struggles in loss to Argos

VANCOUVER, (NEWS 1130) – The BC Lions defence held the team in it until the fourth quarter, but it couldn’t prevent Argo receiver Tori Gurley from catching a 15 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ricky Ray. Toronto handed the Lions their first loss of the season 25-14.

Lions pivot Jonathon Jennings opened the scoring on a one yard sneak. The team then failed on a two point convert. The Argos came back with three Lirim Hajrullahu field goals, including one as time expired in the second quarter giving them a 9-6 lead at the break.

The Argos added a field goal on their first possession of the second half. Hajrullahu then added another after Keon Raymond picked off Jennings for the third Lions turnover, to put Toronto up 15-6.
On the following drive, Lions coach Wally Buono subbed in former CFL Outstanding Player award winner QB Travis Lulay for the struggling Jennings, but the Lions went two and out.

Toronto added to its lead on the next possession when Gurley caught a TD pass in the back of the end zone, making the score 22-6.

Lulay was able to generate some points for BC when he found Anthony Allen for a 15 yard catch and score with 5:22 remaining. The team added a two point convert to get it within one score, but Ray led the Argos on a clock-chewing drive and Hajrullahu sealed it with his sixth field goal of the night.

Ray finished 23-33 for 283 yards and a touchdown, while running back Brandon Whitaker had 97 yards rushing, helping the Argos improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Lions fall to 2-1 with the loss.

Their next game is on Saturday, July 16th in Saskatchewan.
