The Whitecaps to battle the Rapids

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Whitecaps host high-flying Colorado tonight at BC Place. The Rapids are the second-best team in Major League Soccer. They were the worst team in the Western Conference last season with just nine wins. Colorado has already matched that total from a year ago with half the season still remaining.

The Rapids enter the weekend unbeaten in 12 MLS matches.

Vancouver sits tied for the sixth and final playoff position in the West with a 7-8-3 record after a 2-0 loss at LA Galaxy on Monday night.

Whitecaps left fullback Jordan Harvey began his MLS career with the Rapids and knows the success they are having boils down to teamwork.

“From the outside looking in, I feel like they have a team that’s all on the same page, that works together and for one another. I think they get that from their coach (Pablo Mastroeni). He’s a motivator. He’s a great leader and I think he’s managed to get everybody to buy into what they’re all about, which is hard work. And obviously they’re playing really well right now.”

Vancouver needs to be as driven as the visitors if its going to get the win. Especially considering the Rapids are currently the league’s best defensive team. Scoring could be a struggle for the home side as the Whitecaps are once again facing nagging concerns about an inability to finish in front of the net.

Vancouver will also need to sharpen up at the back. Its defence has had holes this season. Last year the defensive unit was one of the best in the league. It’s a problem that needs to be solved quickly given what a tight race to the playoffs it is in the West.

This will be the 15th all-time meeting between Vancouver and Colorado in MLS play.

The Rapids won the season series last year with a 2-1-0 record. Each side won the home matches.

Kick-off is at 7 p.m.
