Burnaby demoviction protest continues in spite of police warning

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – A work of civil disobedience won’t end anytime soon when you ask the people behind it.

That despite police warnings the protesters against demovictions in Burnaby plan to stay.

“They have mostly come in and said ‘do you understand the injunction? Do you understand the implications of what you’re doing? And will you leave voluntarily?’ and we said yes we understand and no we won’t leave,” says Dave Diewert with the Alliance Against Displacement.

He says they are not alone in this fight.

“There’s a lot of support. There’s always people hanging out front, people bringing by food, people bringing by water so I think we are going to be able to hang in there for a bit.”

He says there is no water, police have returned to tell them about the implications of their actions, but they aren’t budging until something changes.

“Demolition of affordable housing and the eviction of renters is something that is increasing on a massive scale in Metrotown.”

Diewert wants a moratorium on so-called demovictions before leaving the building.
