Vancouver Folk Festival goes ahead rain or shine

VANCOVUER (NEWS 1130) – Expect a lot of sweaters and umbrellas along with the usual beach blankets and sandals for this year’s Vancouver Folk Festival.

The 39th annual event takes over Jericho Beach Park this weekend – rain or shine.

It’s been a very slow start to summer, with July’s average temperature so far almost three degrees cooler than normal.

But Gwen Kallio with the Festival says as long as it’s not pouring rain, they are happy with any weather forecast.

“I think that, in fact, the 21, 22 degree weekend is actually pretty perfect for the festival. I don’t know of any outdoor festival that doesn’t watch the sky like a hawk,” teases Kallio.

They’ve used the same weekend for the festival for nearly four decades.

“Weather is weather, there’s really nothing you can do if it decides to do a downpour,” adds Kallio. “Statistically, this weekend, though, is the sunniest weekend in Vancouver over the summer so it was chosen for a reason. More often than not it’s a good one.”

There are over 60 acts performing this year, wrapping up with Bruce Cockburn and Lord Huron tomorrow night.
