FUNERAL TODAY FOR TALIYAH MARSMAN AND SARA BAILLIE

A funeral service will be held today in Calgary for Sara Baillie and her five-year-old daughter, Taliyah Marsman. Baillie, who was 34, was found dead in her northwest Calgary home on July 11th and Taliyah was missing. The little girl’s body was found about three days later in a rural area east of the city. Edward Downey, who faces two counts of first degree murder, will next appear in court on Aug. 3.

CANADA CONCERNED ABOUT TURKISH EMERGENCY STATE

Canada has expressed sharp concerns over Turkey’s imposition of a three-month state of emergency and reports that it may reintroduce the death penalty in response to last week’s botched coup attempt. Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion says Canada respects the need for investigations and prosecutions against the perpetrators of the recent coup attempt, but they must be done in accordance with Turkish and international law.

CANADA, ALLIES FOCUS ON POST-ISIL CHALLENGES

With a military victory over the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in sight, Canada and its allies are turning their attention to what comes next — keeping Iraq together and stopping the spread of terror. Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion and Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan were in Washington on Wednesday, where they and representatives from dozens of other countries heard that the fight against ISIL was going better than expected. A second day of meetings is scheduled for today.

QUEBEC TEAM TO BEGIN TESTING ZIKA VACCINE

A Quebec City-based research team has received the green light to begin testing a Zika vaccine on humans in collaboration with U.S.-based partners. The researchers based at Laval University are the first in Canada to be authorized by Health Canada and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to conduct clinical tests. Phase one of the study will involve 40 volunteers in Quebec City, Miami and Philadelphia.

OLYMPIC FLAG-BEARER TO BE REVEALED TODAY

We find out today who will carry the Canadian flag during the opening ceremony at the Rio Olympics next month. Prime Minister Trudeau and the Canadian Olympic Committee will make the announcement in Ottawa. Triathlete Simon Whitfield carried the flag at the 2012 Olympics in London and kayaker Adam van Koeverden had the honour at the 2008 Games in Beijing.
