NORTH SHORE (NEWS 1130) – Crews are seeing it more and more often — they say there are too many instances of people doing the Grouse Grind, but they’re in no shape to be up there.
The warning comes after several rescues last week and in one case a man died.
He had never done the Grind and it’s an example, North Shore Rescue Team Leader Mike Danks is using to let you know of the dangers. Danks says if you don’t normally go hiking, it not the place to start, instead he suggests checking out easier trails before trying it.
“There are some great trails in Lynn Headwaters Park or even just walking along the river and gauge the distance and compare it. You have to keep in mind when you’re doing the Grind you’re going almost straight up hill so that makes it a lot more strenuous.”
Danks adds you should be well hydrated before attempting it and take a litre of water and high-energy snacks with you, even candy is acceptable.
He also feels too many people also think it’s easy. “I think that’s a big misconception and if you see someone that’s having a tough time, it would sure be great if you’d slow down and ask them if they’re OK and offer them some water or a little bar if you have it.”
And, of course, have the proper footwear and equipment before hitting the mountains.
North Shore Rescue has already seen a very busy summer and it expects to break last year’s record for the number of call-outs.
