Gay PM, no more printed newspapers among possibilities in next decade: survey of Canadians

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Today marks the start of Pride Week in Vancouver and it seems some Canadians think it’s only a matter of time until we have a gay prime minister.

A new poll from Abacus asked Canadians what they thought the likelihood of different events would be in the near future.

A little over half (56%) think sometime within the next decade, our country will have a prime minister who is gay. When you split it down party lines, it’s supporters of the NDP who are the most likely to think that will happen.

A little under half (44%) think one of our major political parties will have a Muslim for its leader in that same timeframe.

With the Brexit vote still fresh, about four in 10 of those asked think the rest of the EU will eventually break up.

More than half (51%) are convinced that there will be no more printed newspapers within the next decade. Almost a quarter think there won’t be any national TV newscasts, either.

Globally, 23% think China will actually become a democracy. But then again, seven per cent think there will eventually be a tunnel that connects North America to the Chinese mainland.
