Warning to cliff-jumpers on the North Shore after trio rescued

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you’re looking for a local swimming hole as a way to cool off during the recent hot weather, rescue crews are reminding you to be careful if you’re trying to find a secluded place to take a dip.

The warning comes as three young men had to be rescued yesterday evening on the North Shore. The trio were cliff-jumping in Lynn Canyon when they realized they couldn’t get out and had to phone 911.

District of North Vancouver Assistant Fire Chief Jason Deroy says they weren’t hurt. “They were all out of the water, but they were stuck and needed assistance getting back up. Seven members were able to set up a rope system and send three rescuers down.”

He adds in this case, it’s lucky no one was injured but it serves as another reminder to only swim in designated areas and follow the posted warning signs. “They were probably a little bit embarrassed, a little bit shook up but the good thing is they stayed put and crews told they to stay where they were so we could get down and assist them back up to the top safely.”

Deroy says the area is marked well and there are designated swimming areas. Despite that, the department has already responded to almost 80 rescue calls so far this year.
