Replacing Charlie’s Tree: local MP says he’s on board

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – After a World War 1 monument toppled over this weekend in the Lower Mainland, Surrey MP Ken Hardie says he would be willing to forward an idea to replace Charlie’s Tree.

The issue would have to be brought to the Veteran’s Affairs Minister Kent Hehr.

Hardie says he would certainly be willing to bring that up.

He knows the impact the tree had on the highway and the city of Surrey.

“It was a landmark and as I recall, just about every November 11th it was festooned with poppies and other things. Obviously, people were visiting the site.”

He says he may also bring the proposal to Heritage Canada.

Hardie says it’s still early in the process, so he doesn’t have any concrete plans, but says there is certainly an appetite to create a permanent monument.
