VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Abbe Gates ran into a problem a few years ago. Her daughter, who has Down syndrome, wasn’t allowed to play on their local soccer team. So she decided to create a league where people with special needs could hit the pitch and have fun.
Now the province has given out the new Medal of Good Citizenship to Abbe.
Skip forward to 2016 and there are 130 kids playing in the league.
She says the accolades are great, but that’s not why she started this.
“I love what I do and to be recognized for something that you absolutely love and you do it for your children and all the others, there are no words. I’m so honoured.”
She says it’s incredible to get this kind of support.
“Honestly, I am so humbled and I’m still standing here shaking like a leaf because I don’t believe it’s really happening.”
Her daughter Sadie had a simple message for her mother.
“Thank you for everything mom. You’re the best. You’re a best-friend. I love you so much.”
