Canadians worried technology could replace jobs: poll

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The combination of technology and the workplace often makes our jobs much easier but according to a poll by Angus Reid, we have concerns technology will replace jobs.

Shachi Kurl with Angus Reid says there are already worries about technology taking jobs away from the manufacturing sector and people know that it could spread to other sectors. “But now as it starts to creep into other jobs, the more professional environments and spheres, two-thirds [of us] do see it as a serious issue.”

And if technology is going to take people out of the workforce, Kurl says it makes sense that a majority of the people they asked are worried about the social safety net. “In general, Canadians are not very satisfied with the effectiveness with the social safety net today when it comes to alleviating poverty”

Angus Reid also asked if a guaranteed minimum income could help. “Who wouldn’t want to support people having a minimum income level so that they are not dealing with poverty, but when it comes to how are they going to pay for it everybody is saying ‘not me,’ and ‘please don’t hit my wallet.’ At least two-thirds of us are saying that.”

Kurl adds 29 per cent of people call the social safety net effective and only 7 per cent very effective.
