Stanley Park water main will under go second round of repairs

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Metro Vancouver crews are going to try to fix a big leak in a water main in Stanley Park this weekend after the first attempt didn’t go to plan.

“We have a leak in our water main which runs through Stanley Park on its way to the City of Vancouver,” says Marilyn Towill with Metro Vancouver.

“We are working to repair the leaking water main as soon as we can, making every effort to maintain our normal water pressure during the repair, and to minimize impacts to traffic, residents and also Lost Lagoon.”

The leak means 430,000 litres of water is spilling each day.

The crews are allowed to block off two of the three lanes on the causeway if it’s absolutely necessary, but Metro Vancouver says more than likely it will be case of one-lane traffic both directions from late on Friday through the weekend.

“We’re hoping to keep it to one lane [closed],” says Towill.

“We’ll use that through the weekend, we’ll set things up, get our excavation in place and then once we’re down to the pipe, we can actually reduce our impact to the traffic and re-establish that while we continue working on the repair in a more localized way.”

Metro Vancouver is confident your water pressure won’t be affected by the repair job on the 1930s era pipe.
