Jennings pulled as Stampeders dominate Lions

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The BC Lions wanted to show they belong in the discussion for the best team in the CFL coming into their first place showdown with Calgary.

Unfortunately for them, the Stampeders had other ideas in a dominating 37-9 win.

Calgary (6-1-1) quarterback Bo-Levi Mitchell threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way.

Lions coach Wally Buono elected to pull QB Jonathon Jennings late in the game in favour of veteran Travis Lulay to no avail.

The BC offence had just 23 yards and did not score a point in the second half, in a game with top spot in the western division on the line.

Jennings went 10-22 for 153 yards before being subbed out. Running back Jeremiah Johnson couldn’t provide a spark either, finishing with 42 yards rushing.

Leading 27-9 going into the fourth, the Stampers put the game away on their first possession of the final frame when Andrew Buckley ran it in from the one. Kicker Rene Paredes made it 37-9 with less than five minutes to go in the game

BC’s poor play in the third quarter allowed Calgary to take control.. The Lions (5-3) defence allowed the Stampeders to extend their lead less than a minute into the second half when running back Jerome Messam rushed it in from the five, putting Calgary up by 15.

The teams traded field goals early in the second, before Mitchell capped off a clock chewing drive with a 13 yard TD pass to Rob Cote. Leone would add another three with 20 seconds left in the half, cutting the Stampeders lead 17-9 at the break.

Calgary opened the scoring when Mitchell hit Bakari Grant for a 21 yard TD. Lions kicker Richie Leone kicked a field goal cutting the Stampeders lead to 8-3 after the first quarter.

The Lions next game is on the road in Ottawa on Thursday.
